For children with autism, pretend play is often compromised. As part of their therapy, children may be asked to pretend to be a cow, a pig, or a firefighter. With use of bluedominoes screensavers, this has just become a little easier.
The screensavers allow parents to upload pictures of their children, themselves, therapists, etc. so the child can see that a number of different people can pretend to be these different animals and community helpers. The screensaver can be used for your personal computer and so much more.
For instance, you can download a picture of your child's face to the cow or pig and in addition to asking "What does a cow/pig say?" or "Who says moo/oink?"; you can also say "Wow - look at you! Are you pretending to be a cow?"
Furthermore, you can print the screensavers and use them in therapy either as is or cut out the animals and attach them to popsicle sticks to make little puppets. You can have your child's picture in the cow as well as their siblings, therapists, and parents. You can then ask questions like "Who's pretending to be a cow?" You can have the different animals play together and also use them for gender identification depending on the photo. If you have downloaded their father or brother's picture on some animals and mother and sister's on others, the child can separate into male/female categories or therapist/family categories.
Storytelling opportunities are also possible with these screensavers. The therapist can script a story about how the cow and pig are at the farm playing and have the child retell the story. They can also pretend that the firefighter is off to put out a fire and discuss where he will go.
As we continue to add more screensavers, we hope to provide you with an opportunity for categorization; i.e. sorting animals, community helpers, etc. - all with the same tools. This assures the child is not just rote memorizing but actually learning that the same set of puppets/screensavers can be used to in different ways.
