Therapeutic Effects of Animals - The Use of Animals in Therapy

For many years, the use of pets in therapeutic or human assistance roles has been warmly accepted by most.  When we see a dog, helping a human make it through their day, we can’t help but marvel at the intelligence, sensitivity and selfless nature of the animal.  But animals do more than help with daily life tasks; according to the CDC they help decrease feelings of loneliness, decrease your blood pressure and cholesterol, plus they provide opportunities for socialization and exercise.

Poor Diet and Memory Loss are Linked

Memory loss has been linked to a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol. The research was conducted by The Medical University of South Carolina and Arizona State University.

Researchers noted that one of the factors of memory loss is associated with inflammation in the brain and a poor diet is one of the contibuting factors to the inflammation. The researchers fed rodents a diet which was high in cholesterol and saturated fat. The rodents demonstrated impairment in working memory.

EFAs from Fish can help reduce/resolve asthma

Cold water fish like salmon, anchovies, and mackerel, contain a specific metabolic product of omega-3 called RvE1. A recently published study looked at RvE1 to determine it's role in inflammation. The researchers discovered it has a key role in both dampening the development of airway inflammation and promoting it's healing in mice. They believe RvE1 weakens signals that trigger inflammation.

Childhood Stress Increases Risk for Allergies

From Pediatric Allergy and Immunology:

Resesarchers examined blood samples from 234 six year old children and noticed increased levels of the stress peptide VIP. The researchers believe that the VIP has a role in the regulation of immune responses that contribute to allergies. Stress events during childhood and their role in the later development of asthma, allergic skin disorders, or allergic sensitations is becoming increasingly suspect.
