Lead in Food
Lead in Food
According to the FDA, these are potential sources of lead exposure from food:
1. Fruits and Vegetables grown in contaminated soil. To reduce your risk, avoid planting right next to your home where exterior paint could flake into your garden. Check out www.bluedominoes.com for the latest article on phytoextraction.
2. Some insecticides sprayed on food contain lead. Years after being sprayed, some apple orchards still have lead in their soil. The most common use for lead arsenate as an insecticide today is primarily against the potato beetle.
3. Imported foods can contain higher levels of lead. An example would be tamarind and chili candies that were imported from Mexico. The wrappers alone contained more than 25 times the acceptable level of lead allowed by the FDA. The lead from the wrappers can be absorbed through the skin and also into the child's gastrointestinal tract once the candies are consumed.
