Long-term effects of neurofeedback in autism

A study conducted by The Behavioural Science Institute and The Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behavior- both in Norway indicates that Neurofeedback therapies are helpful for children with autism.

The study followed children with autism who had completed neurofeedback to see if the results would fade over time, or if the participants would continue to experience gains.

The authors noted maintenance of the improvement these children experienced in both their social behavior and executive function 12 months after their neurofeedback treatments.

The authors of the study state that neurofeedback suppressed theta power and increased low-beta power and say "This promotes more flexible functioning of the brain by enhancing activation in the medial prefrontal cortex and improving flexibility of activation in the default mode network supporting the improvement of executive functions and theory of mind in ASD."
