Rhythms in the Brain and Autism
Rhythms in the Brain and Autism
Research conducted by members of Stanford University states that brain cells need to follow explicit rhythms with proper timing. The research suggests that in diseases such as schizophrenia and autism, the rhythms are “off” and can affect how the brain process information. These rhythms are thought to influence Gamma waves which have been associated with speech and language and are crucial to consciousness, attention, learning and memory.
Scientists from MIT further showed that these brain rhythms regulate the processing of sensory signals; affecting one’s perception. For instance, they found that the brain’s response to tactile (touch) and sound were impacted by the vibration of the cells. According to one MIT researcher, "Gamma rhythms might serve to make a sound louder, or a visual input brighter, all based on how these patterns regulate brain circuits." This may explain why some children with autism are showing benefit from vibroacoustic music therapy. Healing Thresholds reported that patients with autism who received the music therapy had less self-injurious behavior and the behavior continued to decrease after additional sessions and that the patients seemed to feel more secure.
