Homeopathy: An Effective Adjunct in the Treatment of Lead Poisoning

Typically when a child is diagnosed with lead poisoning the first line of defense is DMSA. Some physicians will also suggest vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C and zinc1 and, of course proper nutrition to aid in recovery of lead poisoning.

Dr. Asa Herschoff M.D. states that homeopathic remedies are also useful in cases of lead poisoning2. According to Dr. Herschoff, the homeopathic remedies Alumina and Causticum are effective at treating lead poisoning and alumina in particular helps antidote and eliminate lead from the body. Even Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts comments that homeopathics can help correct imbalances brought on by lead toxicity once the lead has been removed from the body3. So which homeopathic remedies should you discuss with your practitioner if your child is recovering from lead poisoning? There are three major remedies that can be helpful in treating the symptoms of lead poisoning:

RemedySymptoms supporting the use of remedy
AluminaMental confusion, memory loss, dullness, lethargy, loss of identity, high blood pressure and kidney disease4,5.
CausticumGeneral antidote for lead poisoning; especially when nerve paralysis and urinary weakness are present6.
Plumbum MetalicumA homeopathic preparation that is made from lead. The Consumer Health Organization of Canada has documented cases of people with high lead levels eliminating lead from their bodies after 120 to 160 days of taking the preparation of Plumbum Metalicum7.

Combination homeopathic remedies are also available and have been studied as part of an overall protocol for lead poisoning8. Dr. Bruce Shelton M.D. studied 49 patients who all made significant improvements in detoxifying from heavy metals (lead, mercury, and arsenic) when a combination of intravenous chelation and homeopathic remedies were used together. The combination remedies used in the study were produced by HEEL Homeopathic Pharmaceutical Group.

Your homeopath will perform a thorough intake to see if one of these remedies is a good match or if your child is presenting with symptoms that are indicative of another remedy.
