The link between nutrition and behavior is one that intuitively we know. We understand that you should eat a good healthy breakfast and teachers will often emphasize packing healthy snacks and lunches for our children. Several schools have gone even further by providing healthy lunches and choices for their students. The first link outlines changes in the lunch program that were implemented by Appleton Central Alternative High School and the great success it had for their students. The school noticed a change in behavior and teachers reported that the children had longer attention spans. The Principal of the school stated that change in diet settled the children down and took a school that was out of control to one without any dropouts or expulsions. Also, they had far fewer class disruptions and no vandalism. The program has been so successful that a video has been made that discussed the link between food and behavior. The Feingold Program also has some great links on how to change a school lunch program as well as some documented examples of success. The schools noticed everything from behavior changes to increased test scores from changing to nutritious food offerings. They also have a wonderful story on an edible school yard.
